“Udatsu” refers to an architectural feature found in traditional Japanese houses. This feature was used for wind proofing, ornamentation, and protection against fire. Houses with udatsu were once common in the Imadate area. The Udatsu Craft Center building is an example of one of these papermaking houses, and was originally built during the Edo period. It has since been restored, and now reflects the area’s rich papermaking heritage.
“卯立”とは、昔の日本家屋に防火や防風、装飾のため取り付けられていた壁のような部分を指します。ここ今立地区には、かつてこの卯立を上げた家が随所にみられました。
江戸時代中期の紙漉き家屋を移築復元した『卯立の工芸館』は、正面に卯立を立ち上げた風格ある建築様式であり、紙漉き家の誇りと心意気を示すものといえます。
Traditional craftspeople perform every step of the papermaking process here, from processing raw materials to drying sheets in the open air. Udatsu Craft Center is the only studio in Japan in which all of these techniques are still performed, start to finish.

At Udatsu Craft Center, you can experience nagashizuki, or Japanese-style papermaking. Using traditional tools and materials, you can make Japanese paper under the guidance of a craftsperson. This is a challenging, yet fulfilling, experience.
