When I was in America in 1999, my friend in MA told me people didn't hang their clothes outside, and if you did, you would be recognized as the poor.
I don't know if all of America have that idea even now using their drying machine.
But in Japan people think it's good to have them outside to dry under the sunshine. Very healthy way.
I don't know the cities, but here and where I grew up people also dry futon outside. And I like to smell the sun when I sleep. So I also often do this.
